Gynecomastia, Male Breast Reduction
Miami Florida
Men with enlarged male breasts, or gynecomastia often avoid
the pool or other places where they are forced to go shirtless
in public, sometimes missing out on outdoor activities because
of their embarrassment. A male breast reduction, or gynecomastia,
could change a man's life.
Today, almost half of all men have excess glandular tissue and/or
excess localized fat in one or both breasts. According to the
American Society of Plastic Surgeons, gynecomastia accounts for
more than 65 percent of all male breast disorders.
The cause is unknown, in most cases. It can be an imbalance
of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. But diseases including
certain endocrine disorders, tumors, and chronic diseases, heredity
conditions, or certain drugs such as anti-depressants, blood-pressure
medicines, marijuana, and steroids may also cause gynecomastia.
Some boys and men have fat on their chests that can make it
look as though they have breasts. This is called pseudogynecomastia
and may go away with diet or exercise. Some will need treatment
for this, as these fat pockets can be resistant to the effects
of lower caloric intake and working out. In comparison, true
gynecomastia will not usually improve with diet and exercise.
Gynecomastia is not a serious medical problem but can cause
pain. It can also cause embarrassment, particularly in young
boys who may be teased. According to the American Academy of
Family Physicians, up to 65 percent of 14-year-old boys have
enlarged breasts. This is largely due to the fluctuations in
sex hormones that occur during puberty. The excess breast tissue
usually disappears without treatment in two years in 75 percent
of these boys, and within three years in 90 percent of them.
In older men, gynecomastia is often caused by decreased levels
of the male sex hormone testosterone, which occurs with age.
They can also experience an increase in body fat resulting in
a rise in the ratio of estrogen to androgens, the male sex hormone.
